Health Benefits of Kratom

Southeast Asia is the natural home of the coffee family tree known as kratom. It is quite popular in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia and grown in there. You can also refer kratom as Mitragyna speciosa. Its leaves are either ground into a powder and marketed as a supplement, or they are dried and used to make tea. Like tobacco, kratom leaves can also be smoked.

Most health food stores, vape shops, and online specialty stores sell kratom leaves, powder, and capsules.  It is most frequently used to treat opiate addiction, depression, and pain. Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, the two most potent components of kratom, operate on opioid receptors but have fewer negative side effects.

Since over hundreds of years, the herb has been in practice in Southeast Asia for its excellent health benefits. In fact, traditionally, people even used it as a natural home ready to treat fatigue, Diarrhea, Muscle cramps, and pain in the body.

These and other claims of traditional medicine have received some backing from modern science, but much more research is still required.

Kratom: Is it an Opioid?

Because it affects the opioid receptors in your brain, experts classify kratom as an opioid-like substance. It acts as a stimulant in small dosages. High doses, however, can make it an opioid-like painkiller. Kratom has a similar potential for addiction as opioids.

In an effort to reduce their opioid use and ease withdrawal symptoms, some opioid users occasionally switch to kratom instead of the narcotic.

Others, though, use kratom in a way that is akin to an opioid.

Effects of Kratom Extract

On the subject of kratom’s health impacts, very little research has been conducted. Kratom has not yet been proven to be secure or efficient for any application. Some of the health effects under investigation are listed below:

1. Pain Relief

Kratom’s ability to bind to opioid receptors makes it a potential treatment for chronic pain. 7-hydroxymitragynine, a substance in kratom, has a potency 13 times greater than morphine.

While kratom binds opioid receptors in a manner similar to that of morphine and codeine, it is nevertheless regarded as an atypical opioid. Although the negative effects of kratom may be more manageable than those of conventional opioids, the FDA has not yet licensed it for any medical use. Kratom selectively inactivates certain signals.

2. Boosting Mood

Kratom might have mood-lifting properties. According to some findings, kratom may work well to treat opioid addiction. Some people use it to lessen the effects of morphine and ethanol withdrawal.

Early research suggests that kratom might be useful as an appetite suppressant and an antidepressant. Researchers found that kratom decreases corticosterone levels in mice in one experiment on animals. One of the changes in brain chemicals that can be detected in depression is an increase in corticosterone levels.

In a different rat study, kratom supplementation reduced appetite by blocking the hypothalamus, the area of the brain that controls hunger and cravings. To determine whether kratom has comparable effects on people, more research is required.

3. Recovery from Addiction

Kratom extract has shown potential as a non-medical aid for persons recovering from opiate or other drug addiction. Alkaloids included in the extract can help to minimize cravings and withdrawal symptoms, resulting in a smoother transition to a sober lifestyle.

It could develop into a habit if used regularly or excessively. Additionally, the legal status of kratom extract varies from country to country and state to state, so it’s important to understand the rules in your area before purchasing or consuming kratom extract.

4. Stimulant Effects

Kratom in its stimulating forms and dosages may make you feel more energized, alert, and heart-rate-driven. As a natural alternative to coffee or other stimulants, kratom extract is a popular choice because it can improve attention and energy. The extract can increase the blood flow and oxygenation to the brain, which can help with mental clarity and alertness.

5. Reduced Inflammation

Edema and inflammation can be reduced throughout the body because to kratom extract’s anti-inflammatory properties. This may be especially helpful for those who suffer from chronic inflammatory diseases like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other conditions.

6. Better Sleep

Kratom extract can also promote improved sleep by aiding in the control of sleep-wake cycles. The alkaloids in the extract can reduce stress and promote relaxation, which can make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep all night.

Sedative Effects

On the other side, different kratom strains and dosages might either make you feel at ease or disoriented.

Health Risks

You should talk to your doctor before using kratom or any other supplement because it has such strong components and can cause negative impact if taken high dosage or without consultation. Prior to consuming kratom, think about the following:

Kratom Side Effects

Constipation and nausea are two common side effects of kratom, but some users may also experience the following effects:

  • Sweating
  • Itching
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Hallucinations
  • Seizures
  • Liver damage

Kratom for Opiate Withdrawal

According to some sources, kratom can aid in the self-treatment of opioid withdrawal symptoms. However, using kratom for this reason is not permitted. To determine whether it really can aid in withdrawal, experts need to dig deeper.

In some patients, there is also a chance of renal and cardiac damage. Drug dependence might also happen. If you consume kratom, you shouldn’t drive or use potentially hazardous machinery.

Long-term Effects

The results of prolonged kratom use were investigated in one study. Participants also mentioned anorexia, recurrent weight loss, darker facial skin, dry lips, frequent urination, and constipation.

Kratom Withdrawal Symptoms

The following withdrawal symptoms have been reported following frequent and sustained kratom use:

  • Hostility
  • Aggression
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Hypothermia
  • Sweating
  • Drooling
  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Tremors
  • Inability to work
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Jerky movements of the limbs
  • Nervousness
  • Anxiety
  • Depression

The typical duration of these symptoms is one week.

Kratom Dosage

There is no particular dose that is advised for Kratom because the FDA has not approved it to treat any conditions. Early research suggests that raw plant material in concentrations below 5 grams may work as a stimulant similar to caffeine.  In contrast, higher doses of between 5 and 15 grams can have the reverse effect and contribute to pain relief.

To ascertain the short- and long-term consequences of these dosage fluctuations on the body, more research is nonetheless required. Be sure to talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using kratom due to its potency and lack of research to determine safe dosages.

Kratom Strains

Red, green, and white kratom are the three different “vein types” or strains of kratom. The age of the leaf has an impact on the color. According to experts, red kratom may be more potent than green kratom, which is the more traditional variety.

Kratom Usage

Usually, 10 minutes after taking kratom, a person feels the effects. These might go on for an hour or an hour and a half.

Kratom-related goods. Kratom is used by people in many ways. An example is “toss and wash.” Here, the leaf is dissolved in hot water and either drunk on its own or combined with other teas to improve the flavor.

Other forms of kratom include dry leaves that have been crushed or powdered, paste-like extracts, and capsules.

Is Kratom Legal?

The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that several nations have laws prohibiting or strictly regulating the use and sale of kratom. However, it is acceptable and widely accessible in the United States, both online and off. Kratom is not listed on the U.S. schedule of restricted substances, despite being a “drug of concern” in the country.

Does Kratom Show Up on a Drug Test?

Drug tests can occasionally pick up kratom. The substance is detected using certain testing. However, it is rarely tested for in standard drug panels.

Kratom Interactions

These effects will worsen if kratom is combined with other stimulants, such caffeine. Additionally, if any other sedatives are being used, it may exacerbate the sedative effect and may cause respiratory depression and breathing difficulties. You should consult your doctor or pharmacist before adding kratom because it could interact with any supplements or medications you are taking.

Overdose on kratom: There have been a few fatalities brought on by kratom overdoses. This could result from the kratom alone or from any other medicines used with it.

Conclusion

Due to the health advantages it provides, kratom extract is a well-liked solution for people looking for natural alternatives to conventional treatment.

The extract is well known for its alkaloid content, particularly that of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and mood-enhancing effects.

You can find kratom extracts online easily at discounted rates.

But, it is critical to utilize it intelligently and under a doctor’s supervision to lower the potential of its side effects and reliance. Do your research and weigh the benefits and risks before making a choice, just like you would with any dietary supplement or medication.
