How Can You Make Your Earache Go Away?

Check out the below-listed natural remedies that can relieve your ear pain. Remember, the treatment must depend on the cause so it is best to see your doctor as well before using anything new.

1. Over-the-counter pain relievers

Let’s start with the over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. These are two most common pain relievers in the market known for their excellent results. Whether you want to have it with antibiotics or without it, they are completely safe. But still, we recommend follow the label instructions before implementation. In fact, you can even use these medications to lower a fever.

Just make sure to consult your doctor before giving it to children or people with medical history. Many OTC painkillers come in versions for kids and babies. Children under the age of 16 should not use aspirin.

2. Cold or warm compresses

To ease pain, people frequently apply warm compresses, such as a heating pad or a damp washcloth. Ear pain can be treated in the same way. For both adults and children, this technique is secure.

After 10 minutes, switch between the warm and cold compresses over the affected ear. You only need to use one compress, whether you choose it to be cold or warm.

3. Olive oil

Although there is some scientific evidence that drips of olive oil in your ear canal can reduce ear pain, this is not conclusive. However, it is safe to and might be worthwhile to try putting a few warmed drops of olive oil in the ear.

Even so, it’s still a good idea to go over this approach with your doctor beforehand, particularly if you have kids. Using a thermometer, verify that the olive oil is not any hotter than your body temperature. You can avoid scorching your eardrum by doing this.

4. Naturopathic Drops

Extracts of herbs are used to make naturopathic ear drops. They are available at select drug stores and online. An early study discovered that drops with herbal extracts in an olive oil basis may be equally as effective as conventional over-the-counter ear drops, if not more so.

According to a previous study from 2001, taking these drops may help reduce ear pain. However, a 2019 study contends that they don’t always helpful in the management of ear infections.

5. Chiropractic Treatment

If you visit a chiropractor for adjustments, you might discover that your visit relieves both your back pain and your earache.

There aren’t many studies examining this’s efficacy. One previous study from 2011 suggests it might be helpful, but the exact mechanism is unknown. It’s a good idea to visit a doctor first for a diagnosis because the effectiveness will also depend on the underlying cause of your discomfort.

6. Sleep without Putting Pressure on the Ear

Some sleeping positions might make ear infection pain worse, while others can make it go away. Instead of sleeping with the affected ear facing the pillow, raise it. If necessary, this can improve ear drainage.

Using additional pillows will allow you to sleep with your head up as well. This may hasten the ear drainage as well.

10. Distraction

Try to distract a youngster with an earache from the pain in order to make them more comfortable.

You could wish to: play their favorite game on your phone or tablet; pick up their favorite snack; put on their favorite movie; bring home a new coloring book; have a bubble bath with lots of toys; or try to encourage them to pay attention to something else.

Offer cooled teething toys for chewing if your child is in the teething stage.

Adults can use this technique as well. To distract yourself from the earache, reward yourself with a nice book or a memorable movie.

Causes

Earaches can have a variety of causes. Some reasonably frequent causes include: cavities, sinus infections, earwax, tonsillitis, and tooth grinding.

Acute otitis media (AOM), often known as a middle ear infection, is the most typical type of ear infection.

It is characterized by infected and enlarged middle ear regions. The fluid that is trapped behind the eardrum in AOM is what causes the pain. Symptoms can include a fever, ear ache, a minor hearing loss, and generalized malaise.

Babies and young children could feel agitated, irritable, and yank at their ears.

When to Use a Home Remedy

Depending on the cause, there are many home remedies for earaches. Your earache might not go away if a cavity is the cause until you visit the dentist. If it’s an ear infection, though, adopting a natural cure may help you feel better while your body fights the infection.

If your child develops ear pain, especially if they are under 2 years old, be sure to consult your child’s paediatrician.

Seek emergency medical attention if your child has a high fever or if the fever lasts more than a day.

For kids, a high fever is when:

Children of any age oral, rectal, or forehead 104oF (40oC) or greater. Your doctor can advise you on whether you should try home remedies first or consider an antibiotic. Infants younger than three months of age should have rectal temperatures of at least 100.4oF (38oC). Children aged three months to three years should have rectal temperatures of at least 102oF (38.9oC).

Conclusion

Although there isn’t a quick fix for earaches, certain over-the-counter or natural therapies may help. Depending on the underlying cause, you might require medical attention.

Many ear infections go away on their own in a week or two, and after a few days, the symptoms usually start to improve. If your pain stems from something else, it might go away sooner or later. Make a doctor’s visit if the discomfort doesn’t go away after a few days.

It’s a good idea to visit a doctor if you get ear pain in order to determine the cause and whether you require treatment. However, if your discomfort is only light, you can try waiting a little while to see if it goes away on its own. If your discomfort is severe or you also have a fever, you should definitely visit a doctor.
